National Holidays In August

STAFF at the ASDA store in Hounslow have accused their ‘Grinch-like’ bosses of stealing a day off. With New Year’s Day falling on a Sunday, Monday was declared a substitute bank holiday. But the supermarket giant’s employees were neither given paid leave nor paid extra for choosing to work that day.A furious sales assistant said it was the first time this had happened in her four years of working at the store.“We feel they’ve pulled a fast one on us,” said the employee. “It’s a bit Grinch-like and hardly in the spirit of Christmas. Everyone I know who’s not working for ASDA either got paid leave or was given extra pay for working on Monday.”A spokeswoman for ASDA, which also has a branch in Feltham, denied this, saying: “We took the decision to open our stores on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day, as our customers told us they would appreciate the opportunity to restock their cupboards.“We have been briefing colleagues since August on festive opening hours and working over this period is voluntary. Our designation of the days was in line with our colleague handbook.”Workers do not have a right to paid leave on bank holidays, although many employers do give staff the day off.A spokesman for rival firm Sainsbury’s said all its staff who chose to work on Monday were given bank holiday rates.
